Glacier Outdoor Center in West Glacier is hosting its 2nd Annual Dog Skijoring Race on Saturday, January 30, 2010. Located ½ mile west of West Glacier under the log arch, races begin at 12 noon on Saturday and proceeds will help benefit the Humane Society of Northwest Montana.
For anyone unfamiliar with the sport, dog skijoring is a sport where a dog wears a specially designed harness and pulls a cross–country skier who is also wearing a special waist harness with a quick release rope. Basically it is like water skiing behind a dog – no experience necessary!
Spectators and dog skiing enthusiasts are welcome and invited to participate. Registration fees are $25 per team (dog and skier) and all racers need to bring their own run-ready dog and will be automatically entered into a prize drawing. Additionally, 40% of the registration fees will benefit the homeless animals at the Humane Society. Registration fees include dog equipment and trail fees for the day but does not include ski/boot rental which is available at Glacier Outdoor Center. Although trail use fees will still be required, racers who pre-register and pre-pay can use Glacier Outdoor Center’s dog skijor equipment for free any day up to the race to practice.
Pre-registration is recommended by phone at 406-888-5454 or in person at Glacier Outdoor Center. Racers may also pre-register by phone to Whitefish Animal Hospital at 406-862-3178.
Sponsors and prize donations are being furnished by: Glacier Outdoor Center, Glacier Raft Company, Whitefish Animal Hospital, The Hugh Rogers Dog Park WAG, Montana Coffee Traders, Mackenzie River Pizza, and Humane Society of Northwest Montana.
